Sofia Jernberg, geboren in Äthiopien und aufgewachsen in Vietnam und Schweden, ist eine außergewöhnliche Sängerin/Stimmkünstlerin und Komponistin. Sie studierte Jazz und Komposition in Schweden und lebt und arbeitet in Stockholm. Schwerpunkt ihrer Arbeit liegt auf unkonventionellen Techniken und Sounds, wie nicht-verbales Vokalisieren, Split Tones, tonloses Singen und Distortion.
Musiktheater und zeitgenössische Oper spielen eine wichtige Rolle in Jernbergs künstlerischem Schaffen. Sie wirkte in Aufführungen von Arnold Schönbergs Pierrot lunaire 2010 und Salvatore Sciarrinos Lohengrin 2014 des schwedischen Ensembles Norrbotten NEO mit und verkörperte explizit für sie geschriebene Rollen in neuen Werken wie Folie à Deux von Emily Hall und UR_ von Anna Thorvaldsdottir. Die Produktion PIERROT LUNAIRE inszeniert von Marlene Monteiro Freitas und dirigiert von Ingo Metzmacher zeigte sie als Solistin gemeinsam mit dem Klangforum Wien bei den Wiener Festwochen 2021 sowie bei den KunstFestSpielen Herrenhausen und beim Festival d’Automne à Paris in 2022.

Sofia Jernberg, born in Ethiopia and brought up in Ethiopia, Vietnam and Sweden, is a singer and composer. Central to her work are unconventional techniques and sounds with focus on the human acoustic voice. Touching themes like identity, internationality, origin, belonging as well as a strong belief in communion and collaboration.
Music theatre and contemporary opera play an important role in Jernberg’s artistic work. She participated in performances of Arnold Schönberg’s Pierrot lunaire in 2010 and Salvatore Sciarrino’s Lohengrin in 2014 by the Swedish ensemble Norrbotten NEO and embodied roles specifically written for her in new works such as Folie à Deux by Emily Hall and UR_ by Anna Thorvaldsdottir.
