Alain Mabanckou wurde 1966 in der Republik Kongo geboren. Mithilfe eines Förderstipendiums verließ er Ende der Achtzigerjahre seine Heimat, um in Paris sein Jurastudium fortzusetzen. Danach trat er in einen französischen Wirtschaftskonzern ein, für den er fast zehn Jahre lang als juristischer Berater tätig war. Während dieser Zeit erschienen zwei Lyrikbände und sein Debütroman, für den er den Grand Prix littéraire de l’Afrique noir erhielt. Weitere Romanveröffentlichungen folgten, darunter »Zerbrochenes Glas« (2005) und »Black Bazar« (2009). Mit dem Roman »Stachelschweins Memoiren« gewann er 2006 den Prix Renaudot, 2012 wurde er von der Académie française für sein Gesamtwerk mit dem Grand Prix de Littérature ausgezeichnet. 2015 stand er mit »Die Lichter von Pointe-Noire« auf der Shortlist des Man Booker International Prize. Alain Mabanckou lebt in Paris und Los Angeles.

Alain Mabanckou was born in the Republic of Congo in 1966. With the help of a scholarship, he left his homeland at the end of the 1980s to continue his law studies in Paris. He then joined a French business group, where he worked as a legal advisor for almost ten years. During this time, he published two volumes of poetry and his debut novel, for which he received the Grand Prix littéraire de l’Afrique noir. Further novels followed, including Broken Glass (2005) and Black Bazar (2009). His novel The Memoirs of a Porcupine won the Prix Renaudot in 2006, and in 2012 he was awarded the Grand Prix de Littérature by the Académie française for his entire body of work. In 2015, he was shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize for The Lights of Pointe-Noire. Alain Mabanckou lives in Paris and Los Angeles.
